The film tells the compelling story of 17-year-old Gretchen, who is faced with the daunting task of uprooting her life and adapting to a whole new world when she relocates to the German Alps to live with her father and his new wife.

However, the real dark spot in the peaceful resort atmosphere is Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens), herF father’s boss. He is a strong man with an intimidating demeanor and a disturbing obsession with Gretchen’s younger half-sister, who also happens to be mute. His commanding manner and concentrated focus on the defenseless little girl permeates the otherwise tranquil scene, leaving an oppressive feeling of unease lingering in the air.

The highly anticipated film debuted at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, receiving rave reviews. Following its success in Europe, it continued to thrill audiences in North America at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, showcasing its captivating story to a broader audience.

In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, chief film critic David Rooney emphasized the intense dynamic between Schafer and Stevens. He described the two as fierce rivals whose interactions propel the project’s story. With NEON’s support and the film’s weirdness, it might become a cult favorite, even though it may not achieve the targeted level of dread.

The actress is poised to captivate audiences again with her upcoming roles in two highly anticipated films. She has been confirmed to star in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness. Additionally, she is set to star in David Lowery’s Mother Mary, alongside a stellar cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, Kaia Gerber, and Jessica Brown-Findlay. In an interview with IndieWire, she hinted at the mind-blowing impact of Mother Mary, where Hathaway portrays a pop star entangled in a complex romantic affair with a fashion designer played by Coel.

CUCKOO premieres in theaters on Friday, April 9. Watch the trailer below.
