Becky G Celebrates Ten Years of ‘Shower’ and All of Its Success
Becky G is lighting up like the Fourth of July as she celebrates ten years since her breakout hit “Shower.” The decade-old single, originally written for Katy Perry, peaked at number 16 on the Hot 100 Billboard Charts back in 2014 and stayed on the charts for 20 weeks.
Now, the “Mayores” singer took to Instagram to celebrate the milestone. In a photo backed behind balloons that read “Happy Anniversary,” a stunning cake, and of course, the record in the corner, she wrote, “April 23rd 2024 marks 10 YEARS OF SHOWER lil B would be so proud at how far we’ve come. blessed and thankful for the journey.”
Of course, fans joined in on the occasion, as the single was and still is a staple on so many playlists. “FOREVER A BOP,” one user commented, “So proud of baby Becky,” another mentioned. Already a 2010s bop, the single saw a revival in 2020 with the help of TikTok and the “Shower Challenge,” which expanded the song to a new generation.
“I was not expecting ‘Shower’ to have a revival on TikTok. I remember ‘Shower’ started charting again, and I was like, ‘What is going on?’ Then my siblings were like, ‘There’s, like, a shower challenge on TikTok.’ It was so funny to me because it’s an era in my career that happened very early on. I was 16, 17 years old when ‘Shower” came out,’ the Treslúce Beauty founder told Glamour in 2021.
Although a high point in the early stages of her career, the singer recalls the lesson it taught her. “It really taught me a hard lesson more than anything, which is that artistic identity is so important. Anyone could have sang that song. The song was a catchy song that I love so much, but it was bigger than me, and it didn’t really say much. It was just a catchy tune,” she stated.
Since then, Becky G has rebranded herself as a Latin artist, putting out stellar albums including MALA SANTA, ESQUEMAS, and ESQUINAS. Most recently, she performed “The Fire Inside” from the film Flamin’ Hot at this year’s Oscars and released the single “MERCEDES,” featuring Óscar Maydon.
