The untitled Universal Studios project inspired by Pharrell Williams’ life and directed by Michel Gondry has Brian Tyree Henry as a new addition to the cast.

The Emmy award-winning actor, known for his role in the series Atlanta, joins the star-studded cast for the upcoming musical film written by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson. Henry is also a Tony award nominee for the Broadway revival of Lobby Hero and an Oscar nominee for the 2022 film Causeway for his role as the supporting actor alongside Jennifer Lawrance. Additionally, the cast already includes Kelvin Harrison Jr., Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Halle Bailey.

On top of being inspired by Williams’ childhood, the singer is also one of the producers alongside Mimi Valdés under the multimedia creative collective i am OTHER. The twice Oscar nominee, Gil Netter, will also produce but under his company, Gil Netter Productions.

Despite the little available information regarding the premise and who each actor will portray, the film is a coming-of-age story in a musical format. Moreover, the story is set during a 1977 Summer at Virginia Beach, in Williams’ childhood neighborhood, Atlantis Apartments.

Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind re-gained attention earlier this year due to Ariana Grande’s new album Eternal Sunshine and her music video inspired by the film for the single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).” The French filmmaker also won an Academy Award for the film. On another note, the script was written by Hynes, known for Toy Story 4, and Levenson, known for Dear Evan Hansen and Tick, Tick Boom!, two acclaimed musicals.

The project is still in the beginning stages, but you can keep up with more updates here at Glitter.
