First Look: David Corenswet in Superman Suit
Superman fans rejoice. Director, writer, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has just revealed a major sneak peek at the iconic suit that will be worn by the son of Krypton in Superman: Legacy. David Corenswet will be starring as the new Superman.
First, the image has already amassed over one million likes on Instagram in less than a day, with fellow co-star Isabela Merced (portraying Hawkgirl) commenting, “Are these slips-ons or zip-ups?” Nathan Fillion (portraying Guy Gardner) also commented, “So. Epic.”
Before discussing the epic suit hitting the silver screen, we must acknowledge that DC‘s latest take on the iconic superhero comes with an action-packed cast. With notable names, such as Rachel Brosnahan embodying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult portraying the villainous Lex Luthor, Gunn is bringing Superman to life like never before.
With the film already in pre-production, including production design, scripts, and, of course, costumes, now is the perfect time to give fans a taste of what is to come.
Now, let’s talk about Superman’s suit. The suit is a different take on previous Superman suits, such as Henry Cavill’s portrayal, who did not wear the old-fashioned red trunks in Zack Snyder’s universe of Superman films. If you did not know, Gunn is a huge superhero fan, having worked with Marvel Studios previously on the film series Guardians of the Galaxy, with the third installment released just last year.
That being said, Gunn wanted to tap into the nostalgia of Superman and his long red cape with trunks to match. Superman is one of the oldest superheroes to exist, first appearing in the superhero atmosphere in 1938 from the minds of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
Although Corenswet is sitting down in the image wearing his suit, the attention to detail is exquisite. The photo by Jessica Miglio, Gunn’s intrepid still photographer, is entirely in-camera. The suit is weathered blue with the “S” symbol taken centerfold in the picture, which was inspired by older iterations and differs from past live-action super shields.
The suit also features red trunks, fueling the nostalgia for older Superman fans who grew up with the classic look before future reimagining. While Superman: Legacy may be a reboot to set the grounds for the new DC live-action universe, Gunn is assuring fans that no detail will be left out but to keep a watchful eye for hidden easter eggs and references.
The suit also includes a long red cape on the ground as Corenswet sits down in the photo. In the background sits Metropolis at night, with a bright-colored orb or a rip in the sky from another world; trouble looms. Superman can be seen adjusting his tall red boots in the photo, which match his cape, trunks, and the weathered shield on his chest.
What could be going on in the photo, or what might happen next in the photo for Superman? We have a little over a year left to wait and see what Gunn has in store for the film, but until then, here’s to hoping for more exclusive looks at other costumes from the film.
You can catch Superman when he flies up, up, and away into theaters on July 11, 2025.
