In a recent interview, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of Max (previously known as HBO Max) shared that a new Crazy Rich Asians series is being developed.

The film hit theaters six summers ago in 2018, and it was the first major studio film in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast. It’s based on the New York Times Best Seller book series by Kevin Kwan. The book series is a trilogy that follows Rachel Chu and Nick Young, with the first book published in 2013.

The story follows the character Rachel Chu after she meets her boyfriend Nick Young’s family. Unbeknownst to her, he belongs to the top 1%. Chu gets exposed to the world of, “old money, new money, nosy relatives, and social climbers.” Chu is portrayed by actress Constance Wu, alongside other Asian actors like Gemma Chan, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, and Awkwafina.

Moreover, the film received four nominations at the 24 Critics’ Choice Awards, winning Best Comedy, and garnered nominations at the 2019 Golden Globes, the 25 Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the 50 NAACP Image Awards. The film’s success goes beyond numbers, resonating with audiences for its representation and engaging rom-com storyline.

Film Comment critic Michael Sragow suggested, “A binge-able series might have been a better way to go, since the script squeezes a sprawling supporting cast into boisterous caricatures and transforms an intricate flow chart of status among Singapore’s superrich into a flood of affectations.”

However, fans are divided about the adaptation. Some want a sequel film, on the other hand, some are open to a series, while others completely oppose this.

In 2022, a spin-off featuring Chan’s character, Astrid, and Harry Shum Jr. was also announced to be in development. Some fans hope to see an adaptation with this as the focus.

Furthermore, the series could possibly explore the plots of the other two books in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. In addition to the developing series, the director of the film, Jon M. Chu, is set to bring the film and book to Broadway as a musical.

Most recently the film was added to Netflix. Fans can tune in while awaiting other projects in the franchise.
