Chloe Bailey Speaks Her Mind in Latest Interview
Singer-songwriter Chloe Bailey clears the air in her latest interview with Nylon Magazine, where she discusses her upcoming album, Trouble in Paradise, her dating life, and the best advice she has received from Beyoncé.
The Grammy-nominated singer also did a photo shoot for the magazine, and fans can’t get over how much she served with her looks.
Bailey reveals that she recorded most of her sophomore album, Trouble in Paradise, in Saint Lucia, which fans of the actor know is one of her favorite vacation spots. The actress announced the name of her new album during her Coachella set earlier this year.

The songstress describes the album as “a coming-of-age celebration of being a woman and having fun, not taking life too seriously.” Fans will find that Trouble in Paradise is inspired by Saint Lucia, known for calypso, gospel, Afrobeats, and Carnival band music.
The singer’s romantic situations also inspired the project. Bailey expresses, “The story of this album is like when you have a summer fling. You’re a hopeless romantic and you fall in love, deep. You know it won’t last forever, but it feels too good to really care.”
The “Have Mercy” singer has collaborations on Trouble in Paradise. Anderson Paak, Jeremih, and her sister Halle Bailey will feature on the track “Want Me.” The two sisters haven’t had a song together in three years.
When discussing the backstory of “Want Me,” Bailey explains, “It’s weird, because it’s almost like I wrote the song for two without knowing it. It started as a heart-to-heart between girlfriends. I was talking to one of my engineers, and she was telling me about this guy and how into her he is, and I was sharing a similar story. I was like, ‘But am I that much into him? Why is it that the ones we want don’t want us like this?’ I immediately wrote it down in my notes, and the song wrote itself in, like, five minutes.”

The singer found herself in a rut a few months ago regarding her music. Bailey states, “My brain just needed a reset, and it needed to find the joy and magic within music again. When you live in a world where everything is so numbers-based and so analytical, it can start to suck the fun out of creativity.”
However, Queen Bey gave her some advice she never forgot: “You have to let the world catch up because you’re always ahead of the curve.”
The songwriter believes that her debut album was ahead of its time. She explains, “When In Pieces came out, not many people really got it. But now a year later, people are like, ‘Oh, it’s genius! It’s beautiful! It’s amazing!’ And if you think about it, that’s how it has been with me and my sister’s previous work as well. No one ever gets it when it first comes out.”
The “FYS” singer also reiterated that she is a genre-less artist, first and foremost, after receiving criticism for her uptempo song “Boy Bye.” Bailey explains, “Any music I do will easily and quickly be categorized as R&B because I’m a Black woman. If someone who didn’t have my skin tone made the same music, it would be in the pop categories. That’s just the way it’s always been in life.”
The genre-breaking artist takes inspiration from those who came before her, such as Beyoncé and Whitney Houston. When talking about Whitney, Bailey states, “Early on in her career, when she was doing the big pop records, she got a lot of flak for that: being told she wasn’t Black enough and wasn’t catering to the base that made her. Seeing how she persevered and became one of the most iconic, legendary artists we’ve ever seen shows that music has no race, no genre, and none of that. It’s just a feeling, and it’s a vibration.”
Fans can expect Trouble in Paradise later this summer. You can listen to Chloe Bailey’s music on all platforms. In the meantime, check out her video with Nylon below.
