Cameron released her debut album, Alchemical: Volume 1, last December. The dark pop album had the hit single “Boyfriend,” which quickly became a gay anthem. However, Volume 2 will showcase the star’s current mindset. The actress is also set to play the lead in an upcoming series called Obsession on Amazon Prime Video.

During the interview, the “Breakfast” singer revealed that she didn’t always fit the Disney mold. Cameron explains, “By the time I was living in L.A. and auditioning for things, there were just so few roles for kids that age. So I ended up going out for a couple of Disney pilots before one of the casting directors called my agent, and was like, ‘First of all, she’s not funny. Second of all, she’s got this kind of dark edge that is really off-putting and it’s never going to work for Disney.'”

Releasing Alchemical: Volume 1 was part of the singer’s reintroduction. However, Cameron talks about how the writing process for Volume 2 differed from Volume 1. “When I started writing Volume 2, I really thought I was only going to write four or five more songs. And then I started doing this exercise. The very first week of January, I started going in Monday through Friday, 9 to 5, sometimes two sessions a day, sometimes trying to write three songs a day and just see what comes of it,” she states.

The “Sand” singer has expressed that Volume 2 will come from a healthier place. She reveals that the mental health work she did on herself is a big part of how it came to be.

Cameron also fell in love with Måneskin lead singer Damiano David, who influenced the album. The pair made their first public appearance as a couple at this year’s Grammys. The singer describes David as “a 1950s gentleman, angel, teddy bear. He’s the best person I’ve met in my life.”

The former Disney star revealed that Alchemical: Volume 2 will mostly have love songs. “It’s going to be very obvious. It’s literally talking about speaking Italian and meeting his mother, and you look like Freddie Mercury. I’m not hiding anything,” she states.

In the past, people have accused the “Lethal Woman” singer of queerbaiting with her songs. Cameron expresses, “It would be such a wild, wild backflip to change the course of your whole life for a radio hit.”

Cameron ends the interview with a line that defines her new era: “Things are only impossible until you redefine the possible.”
