Award-winning actresses Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen, and Carrie Coon star as the three daughters, all coming from very different lives uniting to care for their father. The film depicts them handling grief, while also trying to mend their estranged relationship with one another.
First, Lyonne’s character Rachel seems to be the one struggling the most throughout the trailer, even smoking weed outside her father’s apartment to cope with his impending loss. While Rachel struggles with depression, her sister views her as quite lazy. Her lack of energy in the trailer to complete simple tasks angers them, but they do not realize the full extent of her inner battles.
Second, Olsen’s character, Christina seems to have the perfect life. With a child of her own and her daily yoga practice shown in the trailer, Rachel is envious of the perfect life she seems to lead. However, that is not the case, as Christina eventually suffers from a mental break down.
Third, Coon’s character, Katie, seems to be struggling with an alcohol addiction. Christina points out that “Katie started drinking a few hours ago” in the trailer, noting that each sister has their own coping mechanisms when it comes to grief. Rachel smokes weed, Christina practices yoga, and Katie drinks in an effort for the pain to ease.
The sisters also have varying personalities. Rachel never wants to stop talking and fears their father’s looming presence over the three women, while Christina wants to look on the bright side of things. Katie on the other hand, sits back and allows the sisters to do whatever they choose, a more laid-back approach to their situation.

When the film originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 29, 2023, it was welcomed with raving reviews and praise for illustrating such complex realities of strained family dynamics. While also adding familial love and humor to the mix, grief can be processed in a multitude of ways, the process is not linear.
“There is no one way to handle the passing of a loved one, and yet in the end, we’re all brought together by the same experience that is saying goodbye to someone that has left an irrevocable imprint on our lives,” via Collider.
His Three Daughters is set to release in select theaters on September 6, while officially streaming on Netflix starting September 20. You can watch the trailer for the film below.
