Percy Jackson Series Announces New Cast Member Andra Day
The Percy Jackson series has finally found its Athena. The series enlists Andra Day for the portrayal of the goddess of wisdom for their second season.
A few days ago during Disney’s D23 celebration in Brazil, the Percy Jackson series released a special announcement for fans. As the latest adaptation of the book series is currently in production for season two, so are castings for new characters. While many fans are already familiar with characters from the novel, experiencing them in live-action will be a treat.
Around two months ago, actress Tamara Smart was announced as the role of Thalia, the daughter of Zeus. Now, actress and musician Andra Day has been announced to portray the role of Athena. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, is also Annabeth’s mother. The mother-daughter duo is famously known for having a strained relationship. Annabeth is a demigod, often resenting her mother for some of her actions as she grows throughout the series.
Andra Day is relatively new to the world of acting but has made an impressionable debut. Her first role was in Lee Daniels’ 2021 biopic The United States vs. Billy Holiday, where she depicted the title role. The film earned her a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, and a Grammy for best soundtrack. She also appeared in another of Daniels’ projects this year, starring in The Deliverance alongside Glenn Close.
Before reaching acclaimed success in acting, Day was known for her talent as an R&B singer, with an extensive discography. Some of her albums include Cheers to the Fall and her latest release Cassandra (Cherith), which was released earlier this year.
In a recently shared Instagram reel, the singer expresses her excitement to join the star-studded cast. “I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors. Stay tuned for this epic journey, y’all.” There is not a set date for when the series will release season two, but previews for the upcoming installment assure fans that season two will be streaming next year.
Until then, catch up on the Percy Jackson series by streaming season one only on Disney+.
