Selena Gomez opened up about her evolving career, her recent projects, and personal growth in a candid interview with W Magazine.

The multi-talented star is riding a wave of success as she enters this new year. With her engagement to producer Benny Blanco, two Golden Globe nominations for Only Murders in the Building, and her role in the critically acclaimed Emilia Pérez, Gomez has plenty to celebrate.

In Emilia Pérez, the actress takes on the role of Jessi, the wife of a cartel leader played by Karla Sofía Gascón. The film, directed by Jacques Audiard, was a standout at the Cannes Film Festival, earning the Jury Prize and a shared Best Actress Award for its female cast.

Despite her global fame, the star revealed a surprising moment about the project, Audiard initially had no idea who she was. “It was a little baffling, but it also makes me so happy to have someone believe in me simply because I was able to do a good job. That felt really validating,” Gomez shared.

Reflecting on her career, the Rare Beauty Founder discussed some of her bold choices, including her role in the cult classic Spring Breakers. “Spring Breakers was a ride. It was actually my mom’s idea that I work with Harmony [Korine]. I felt I needed a jolt. And working on that film, as audacious as it was, I felt a rush I had never felt before,” she explained. “I generally live in comedy, and that’s really fun—I’m naturally pretty dry and sarcastic. But to be challenged in a role is what I really crave as an actor.”

Of course, Gomez hasn’t forgotten her roots. She expressed a deep affection for her time on Wizards of Waverly Place, the Disney Channel series that launched her into superstardom. Wizards of Waverly Place holds such a special place in my heart. I understand that it’s for children, and maybe I’ve moved on, but the little girl in me hasn’t,” she expressed.

Looking ahead, the star hopes to pass the series for a potential revival, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. She envisions taking a backseat as a producer, allowing a new generation to bring the magic to life.
