Doechii Makes Waves at Grammy Awards and Drops New Single
Doechii the Don, Doechii the Dean, Doechii Supreme, the… Grammy winner. Doechii made history at the 2025 Grammy Awards, joining Cardi B and Lauryn Hill as the third woman to win the Best Rap Album award. The awards have cemented her place in Grammy history and the industry.
Tearfully accepting the award from Cardi B, the self-proclaimed Swamp Princess credited her sobriety and faith in God for her success. “I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded and he would show me how good it would get.”
She advised young Black girls not to “allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud,” she stated. “You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are and I am a testimony.”

The Best Rap Album category was first introduced in 1989. Several men have won, including Eminem, Kanye West, and Kendrick Lamar. The Fugees won the award in 1997, making Lauryn Hill the first-ever female recipient. In 2019, the award went to Cardi B for her debut album, Invasion of Privacy. This year, the category was stacked with competition from J. Cole, Eminem, Future, and Metro Boomin’s collaborative album.
Doechii, born and raised in Tampa, Florida, developed a cult-like following in 2020 with her single, “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.” The blunt honesty in the track made it a viral hit on TikTok in 2021. The online success led to a record deal with Columbia Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, which housed fellow Grammy winners Kendrick Lamar and SZA.

Her third mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, was released last year to critical success. Rolling Stone ranked the album at number 9 on their list of the Best 100 Albums of 2024. Kendrick Lamar praised her on Instagram as the “hardest rapper out” following the release. She is featured on Tyler, The Creator’s Chromakopia album, and collaborated with industry legend Missy Elliott. She capitalized on the growing success with a viral NPR Tiny Desk performance last month.
Following her win, the artist performed “Catfish” and “Denial is a River” to millions watching, complete with eclectic choreography and identical outfits with her dancers. She received a standing ovation.
To seal the deal, Doechii dropped a freestyle, “Nosebleeds,” after the event. The short track references an infamous Kanye West Grammys incident and, like “Denial is a River,” has no hook.
“Right now it’s my time and my moment/Thank you to my swamp and thank you to God I was broke/I thanks you God and I thank you Top Dawg Entertainment,” she asserted over a sporadic beat.
With a Grammy under her belt, it is safe to assume that Doechii is here to stay.
