In Prime’s latest sitcom, Clean State, the Norman Lear formula gets a refreshing makeover. The series Love, Acceptance, and Car Washes: A New Era, takes a different approach to telling a trans woman’s story.

The story follows Desire, played by Laverne Cox, who is returning to Alabama after a breakup to reconnect with her father, Harry, played by George Wallace. When she reveals that she is trans, the expected tension turns into swift acceptance. But his biggest shock? Learning his daughter is a vegetarian. Their relationship quickly blossoms.

Breaking Protocol: A New Era

Unlike traditional sitcoms that lean toward conflict and prejudice, Clean State tries to create a world where acceptance is the norm. Desiree finds safety in church choir ladies, and in the process, develops a romantic tension with a single dad. Even when her pastor refuses to change her baptismal certificate, there is great support from her community. Leading to Desiree’s closeted gay friend coming out.

This show presents an aspirational version of America, where trans individuals don’t face systemic challenges. While it may seem disconnected from our current realities, it serves a different purpose, offering hope and joy rather than confrontation. The show also takes on other topics, like the importance of healthy eating and fostering parent-child relationships to navigate childhood.

In today’s media landscape, Clean State tries to avoid the need to convince its audience. Instead, it creates a feel-good environment where Harry’s Car Wash becomes a place of renewal for bonds in friendship and family that overcome prejudice. The show delivers something valuable. While Prime hasn’t heavily promoted the show, it stands as a beacon of positivity compared to Primo and High School, which faced early cancellations.
