Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie shattered box-office records, opening with $163 million domestically and $150.7 million overseas, netting $313.2 million total.

Following a slow start to the year for box offices, these statistics surpassed expectations, doubling some pre-weekend estimates. Because of the film’s success, it took the top spot for a video game adaptation, beating Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie launch in 2023, which grossed $146.4 million.

Based on the Minecraft video game, the film easily acquired the largest domestic opening in 2025 thus far. With a production budget of $150 million, it was the first film of the year to gross over $100 million in America.

The film actually takes the biggest domestic launch since Deadpool & Wolverine in July 2024, which made $211 million. The film even surpasses Barbie, which collected $162 million and marked Warner Bros.’ biggest domestic opening since 2016, when Batman v Superman opened to $166 million.

Starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, A Minecraft Movie follows the hilarious adventure of an unlikely group as they travel between realms.

The official synopsis reads, “Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group co-CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed in a statement, “We’re absolutely overjoyed A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world. A Minecraft Movie’s decade long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response.”
