Shonda Rhimes, Gina Rodriguez + More Celebrate Female Filmmaker Friday
If there’s one thing we don’t celebrate enough, it’s female filmmakers.
Women directors took to Twitter on Friday to celebrate the accomplishments of women in film. Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal creator, Shonda Rhimes thanked the women directors that have contributed to her productions in Shondaland. SMILF director, Frankie Shaw showed her behind-the-scenes experience as a director and the deep care that goes into the series.
THANK YOU to all the women directors who have worked and are currently working in #shondaland! #femalefilmmakerfriday You change the game!

Where the only thing a wrinkle in your brow means is that you deeply care, and the only thing that matters about your gut is that you’re in touch with it. #FemaleFilmmakerFriday pic.twitter.com/kgE13jX1jw

The hashtag comes on the heel of this year’s Oscar nominations, where Lady Bird director and writer, Greta Gerwig is the only female nominated for directing. As of 2018, Gerwig is also only the fifth women to be nominated in the director category.
#FemaleFilmmakerFriday My first time directing in 2008 on a short film called PARENTAL GUIDANCE. I made so many mistakes but I learned 2 important things: that I love directing & I have good instincts! If I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT! Learn from your mistakes & keep doing it! pic.twitter.com/TAI4FVPP17

Gina Rodriguez, who stars on Jane the Virgin, also participated in the discussion. Rodriguez recently made her directorial debut on her hit CW show, tweeted about the experience being “challenging and invigorating” as a woman of color. Ava DuVernay, the upcoming director of A Wrinkle In Time, tweeted about her various experiences on the projects she has directed.
#femalefilmmakerfriday my 1st experience directing was on the show #JanetheVirgin it was afforded to me by Wonder Woman @JennieUrman As a woman of color and the star of the show I found it both challenging and invigorating! I can and I did! Just the beginning. pic.twitter.com/1soG2NiAj9

Happy #FemaleFilmmakerFriday. I love seeing all the images of women helmers doing their work. We are a small, but mighty tribe. A few pix with my boys on #WrinkleinTime. pic.twitter.com/tWUawlkGVt

Some men in the entertainment business, such as screenwriter Zack Stentz (Thor, The Flash), took the time to express their appreciation for female filmmakers on projects that often go unnoticed.
Also for #femalefilmakerfriday, I’d like to give some love to America’s greatest living documentary maker, Barbara Kopple. Harlan County, U.S.A. & American Dream are ESSENTIAL films to understand how we got here as a country: pic.twitter.com/HepJh1iOiq
