Listen to Hayley Williams’ Acoustic Cover of ‘Drew Barrymore’

Atlantic Records

The singer revealed the stripped-down cover of the iconic song from SZA’s 2017 Ctrl album on May 24.

Labeled “self-serenades / amateur hour,” the video shows Williams at home, casually strumming her guitar and singing. This is part of a series of casual performances Williams posted in the past few weeks, her previous covers include Tegan and Sara’s “Call It Off” and Paramore’s “In The Mourning.”

In her caption, Williams revealed that she recorded the video on April 11 and promises there are more song covers to come, “have a few saved up, guess I’ve been holding out on yall,” she wrote on her Instagram. The singer also said, “the only constant for me (besides limp ass, unwashed, unfixed hair) in the age of COVID, is a guitar and free reign to mess up all my favorite songs.”

Earlier this month, on May 8, Williams released Petals for Armor, her first studio album produced without Paramore, the rock band that she has served as a frontwoman since its start in 2002. The solo project — featuring some of Williams’ most personal lyrics to date — has been widely well-received, currently taking the number one spot in Billboard’s Top Rock Albums Chart.

“It felt right to own these stories for myself and challenge myself to believe in Hayley, the person,” Williams shared regarding the album in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Being like, ‘I did all this. I’ve been through this, and I just need to get it out.’”

While you wait for more incredible song covers from Williams, you can listen to her sing in Petals for Armor now.
