Liza Koshy Apologizes in Response to Past Controversial Videos Resurfacing on TikTok
The popular YouTube personality has responded to accusations of racism made against her on social media, and here’s what she has to say.
In a since-deleted video that was posted to Liza Koshy’s channel, her and her ex-boyfriend, David Dobrik, taste-tested candy from Hawaii and Japan, during which Dobrik pretended to speak Japanese. Koshy and Dobrik also pretended to speak Japanese in a second video titled “Couple Trying Foreign Candy,” which was made private on Dobrik’s channel on Monday afternoon.
Although these videos were posted several years ago, they were brought to the attention of fans once again after a TikTok user called Koshy and Dobrik out for their actions. As of Monday, the video has over 1.4 million views and 73,000 likes.
@callmesukiwiWhy is no one talking about this? It’s a clear example of the normalized racism against Asians @daviddobrik @lizzza ##fyp ##asian♬ original sound – callmesukiwi
In response, Koshy, released a statement to her 18.4 million Instagram followers on Sunday apologizing for her past actions.

Koshy concluded her apology by acknowledging that her identity as a woman of color does not exempt her from saying things that may perpetuate racist ideas. “I see now that some of my previous influences and my own past thinking, speaking and storytelling reinforced stereotypes.” She also stated her commitment to being an active “ally in action” from this point on.
But she is not the only one vowing to do better. Many YouTube stars including Shane Dawson and Jenna Marbles have also released videos apologizing for their actions in the past and promising to be more aware of the content they put out moving forward.
