Instacart launched the #GiveFromTheCart challenge and teamed up with Feeding America to help provide food to communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This challenge was started to encourage consumers to make a donation comparable to the value of their last grocery cart to help “fight rising hunger.” On Tuesday, July 15th, Instacart took to Instagram and announced this challenge, listing ways to participate.

Serena Williams and her family accepted this challenge, donating 50,000 meals to Feeding America. “I’m so grateful to be partnering with Instacart and Feeding America for the #GiveFromTheCart Challenge — together we are working to fight rising food insecurity,” Serena Williams said in a press release with Instacart news. “I am kicking off the challenge by donating 50,000 meals, and I hope you’ll join me in supporting the communities that need our help the most right now.”

From July 11 to August 14, each dollar donated will be used to fight hunger in support of the #GiveFromTheCart campaign.

Instacart is an online grocery store that operates delivery and pick-up services across the United States. This is not the first time Instacart helped make a difference. Back in June, Instacart donated 2 million meals to food banks during the pandemic, to counties with the highest food scarcity rates.

“Our mission is to create a world where everyone has access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together. We’re proud to partner with Feeding America on the #GiveFromTheCart Challenge to help increase access to food at a time when more people than ever before are grappling with food insecurity in the wake of COVID-19,” said CEO and Founder Apoorva Mehta, in a press release with Instacart news.“We believe that groceries are more than just food — they’re an expression of warmth and connection. We invite people everywhere to turn their groceries into good and #GiveFromTheCart to donate the value of their last grocery cart to help a family in need.”
