The Weeknd to Be Honored at First Black Music Action Coalition Awards Ceremony
Abel Tesfaye, known as The Weeknd, will be honored at the first-ever Black Music Action Coalition Awards. The singer will be receiving the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award for his extensive work. According to the Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC), the ceremony honors musicians, music executives, and music businesses that have made the most significant contributions to social justice, change, and/or equity over the preceding year.

The previous year had the whole world on lockdown, unsure of what was to come. Despite the pandemic, artists like The Weeknd showed up for their fans that had been struggling. According to Variety, The Weeknd has donated millions of his hard-earned money to causes near and dear to his heart—Black Lives Matter Global Network, Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp Legal Defense Initiative, and National Bail Out. He also donated to COVID-19 relief for MusiCares campaigns and relief efforts in Ethiopia and Lebanon.
Not only did The Weeknd donate $200k, but he also called out his peers to do the same. Thats how it should be done!

The Weeknd is always outspoken on issues both in and outside of the music industry. The singer, much like BMAC, an organization that recognizes racism presented in the music industry and society, continues to use his voice and platform to seek change.
More recently, The Weeknd boycotted the Grammys since his critically-acclaimed album After Hours failed to receive a single nomination. He revealed, “I think the industry and public alike need to see the transparent system truly at play for the win to be celebrated, but it’s an important start. I remain uninterested in being a part of the Grammys, especially with their own admission of corruption for all these decades. I will not be submitting in the future.”
The fact that The Weeknd’s After Hours album didn’t got nominated to the Grammys is outrageous.
