The Weeknd Announces He Is Starring in and Co-Writing a New Cult Series on HBO

Working alongside Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, The Weeknd will help write and star in a new cult series called The Idol on HBO. Taking the switch from music to acting and producing, fans of the "After Hours" singer are quite invested in what this new project will entail.

Working alongside Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, The Weeknd will help write and star in a new cult series called The Idol on HBO. Taking the switch from music to acting and producing, fans of the “After Hours” singer are quite invested in what this new project will entail.

The Weeknd, tagging HBO in a tweet confirming the new show, seems to have quite an exciting storyline. According to an initial article by Variety, the show “follows a female pop singer who starts a romance with an enigmatic L.A. club owner who is the leader of a secret cult.” A cast list has yet to be announced as the only member currently known is Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd. Working alongside Levinson, others credited in the production and creation include Tesfaye’s creative producer and well-known L.A. nightlife entrepreneur Reza Fahim and Mary Laws with a team of co-writers and executive producers. Joseph Epstein will also serve as showrunner for the series.

The multi-award-winning singer is no stranger to the acting and producing world. He also co-wrote an episode of a comedy show American Dad, titled ” A Starboy Is Born,” and was featured in the critically acclaimed 2019 film Uncut Gems, which starred Adam Sandler. While no other news has been announced yet regarding The Idol, fans of The Weeknd are quite excited for this new era of content from the singer. Many fans remember the smaller roles he had in these various TV shows and movies and are really excited to see him in a larger role.

The Weeknd has become one of the biggest stars over the past few years and only continues to succeed with everything he puts out. Taking home quite a few awards between the recent iHeartRadio Music Awards and Billboard Awards, his most recent album After Hours has been doing quite well and was well-received by his fanbase. Performing at the SuperBowl halftime show back in February, the singer has been on a roll with large projects and collaborations. Recently featured on rapper and singer Doja Cat’s new song “You Right” and working with one of the biggest leaders in pop music Ariana Grande on the “Save Your Tears” remix, The Weeknd has not stopped giving his fans new music and things to look forward too from him.
