Whoopi Goldberg Joins Danielle Deadwyler To Star In New Movie About Emmet Till
Whoopi Goldberg has joined Danielle Deadwyler to star in upcoming film Till. The film will be based on the tragic story of Emmett Louis Till who was murdered shortly after being falsely accused of whistling at a white woman back in 1955.
The legendary Whoopi Goldberg has signed on to star in upcoming film, Till alongside Watchmen star Danielle Deadwyler.
Goldberg will be playing Till’s grandmother Alma Carthan while Deadwyler plays the role of his mother Mamie Till-Mobley. Not only will Goldberg be starring in the upcoming film, but the Oscar-winning actress will also be serving as a producer. Goldberg told Variety:
“We have waited a very long time to bring this historically necessary important film to people. And as we watch the repression of American History when it comes to people of color it makes it even that more important.”
Based on the 2005 award-winning documentary by Keith Beauchamp and directed by Nigerian-American film director, Chinonye Chukwu, the film unveils the story about Till-Mobley’s fight for justice for her 14 year-old-son Emmett Till. In August of 1955, Till was kidnapped from his uncle’s home and was brutally murdered after being falsely accused by Carolyn Bryant for whistling at her at a store in Mississippi.
Till-Mobley later made the decision to have an open casket at Till’s funeral to display the horror of her son’s murder which resulted as the catalyst that ignited the Civil Rights Movement.
According to Variety, Deadwyler expressed her deep gratitude for playing as Till-Mobley herself:
“I am charged with humility and great will to embody her life at such an integral moment of personal tragedy and political rebellion, a boon to the civil rights movement, and to represent the joy in the love and life shared between Mamie Till and her beloved Emmett Till.”
