The Sable video game soundtrack had been released on September 23, receiving rave reviews. The Sable soundtrack, which consists of a whopping 32 songs, had been scored by none other than Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner.

Upon releasing Zauner’s first video game soundtrack, the singer took on the project with delicate care and precision. Sable had been an extensive project, taking a total of four years to complete. The “Be Sweet” singer felt the utter importance of paralleling the music alongside Sable’s journey.

On September 29, just a week shy of Sable’s release, Zauner shared an intimate performance of “Better the Mask,” track 3 off the album. Most of the Sable soundtrack is wordless, but Zauner does contribute to the song vocally on “Better the Mask,” “Main Menu,” and “Glider.”

“Better the Mask” is a clear standout on the record. Zauner took to social media to tell the story behind the delicate string arrangement. The singer tells fans that “Better the Mask” had been written during the lockdown period. She elaborates, “To pass the time, I found myself turning to the piano, practicing intently for the first time in years, and putting together what would become my favorite song I’ve ever written.” The end result is nothing short of magical, as Zauner effortlessly blends their voice together along with the instruments used in the piece: the piano, violin, viola, and cello.

This has been quite the year for Zauner, who joked on social media that “she’s tired!” Nevertheless, Zauner’s art certainly does not go unnoticed by beloved fans.

Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner continues to stun with their music with each passing day. Be sure to watch Zauner’s stunning performance of “Better the Mask,” recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios above.
