Japanese Breakfast has dipped their toes into the video game world. The singer-songwriter has released their first music score to the video game Sable.

Michelle Zauner, who performs under the stage name Japanese Breakfast, has finally shared the mainly wordless ambient pop soundtrack to Sable. In this video game, users play as Sable, a young girl on a coming-of-age journey who is trying to figure out who she is. Sable encompasses various worlds, from the ancient ruins to atomic ships, to the glow worm cave, among other forms of exploration.

Zauner has been working on the Sable soundtrack for four years. The “Be Sweet” singer reveals their love for video games, admitting their interest piqued when viewing the enchanting gifs of Sable’s journey. Zauner tells Composer Magazine, “I think it was important to [the developers] to find a composer that was outside of the game world – but had an appreciation of games – to bring something new.”

Zauner revealed that working on Sable consisted of “a long Word document and a few gifs.” It was quite the puzzle, as Zauner often wrote pieces of material that would not fit for one part of the game but might work for another part. As day turns to night as one plays the video game, fans will find that Zauner’s music becomes atmospheric. The singer tells of the music changes, “I liked the idea of certain instruments representing different directional points of the game. So, for example, if you go north-west, those biomes start to incorporate this crystal-sounding piano, or if you go south, you get some more percussive elements.”

Fans have stormed social media amid this beautiful world Zauner has created in Sable.

Sable has Zauner experimenting with instruments to take the place of words to tell a story. The result is a powerful and atmospheric journey. Congratulations to Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner on yet another incredible piece of music.
