“Nimona’s always been a spunky little story that just wouldn’t stop,” Stevenson wrote. “She’s a fighter…but she’s also got some really awesome people fighting for her. I am excited out of my mind to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE…coming at you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix.”

Initially, the movie was announced in 2015 by Blue Sky Studios. In 2019, Disney gained 20th Century Fox along with Blue Sky Studios, the branch of 20th Century Fox that created the Ice Age series. Disney attempted to shut down Blue Sky Studios along with Nimona when 75% of the film was completed, with the film set to release on January 14, 2022. Ultimately, the studio was shut down, leading to another delay. Former Blue Sky employees claimed that Disney had a problem with the same-sex kiss in the movie. After a long battle and countless delays, Netflix saved the day by picking up the film.

The animated film follows a teenage shapeshifter, Nimona. She and Knight Ballister Boldheart embark on an adventure to clear his name. It’s up to them to prove the knight’s innocence. The film explores different themes, such as not labeling people, not allowing yourself to be defined, and more.

The film has a star-studded cast. Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) will be voicing the spunky heroine herself. Riz Ahmed (Venom) will be starring as the wrongly convicted knight and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin. Netflix partnered with Annapurna to create the movie, which will be released sometime in 2023.
