In an exclusive profile for Better Homes and Gardens on Tuesday, Harry Styles spoke up about the relentless discourse surrounding his sexuality. As the magazine’s unexpected June cover star, the Grammy-winner also got candid about creating his new album, overcoming societal expectations, and finally feeling at home.

With the release of Harry’s House right around the corner, Styles revealed his upcoming album is his “most intimate” to date. After years spent worrying about how people would perceive both him and his music, the 28-year-old pop star admits he no longer cares if his latest projects are commercially successful. “I just want to make stuff that is right, that is fun, in terms of the process, that I can be proud of for a long time, that my friends can be proud of, that my family can be proud of, that my kids will be proud of one day,” Styles told BHG

Having spent the last decade in the spotlight, the singer-songwriter is no stranger to public scrutiny. However, when the world started making assumptions about his sexual orientation, he found it difficult to deal with. From donning dresses to parading Pride flags, he often felt coerced to choose a side. But the musician considers labels “outdated” and refuses to acquiesce.

“I’ve been really open with it with my friends, but that’s my personal experience; it’s mine,” Styles stated. “The whole point of where we should be heading, which is toward accepting everybody and being more open, is that it doesn’t matter, and it’s about not having to label everything, not having to clarify what boxes you’re checking.”

Harry’s House is about personal transformation and finding a home. While the artist admits he’s fallen prey to societal expectations in the past, he finally feels free, and his upcoming record is a reflection of that. Find out exactly what he means by streaming his new album on May 20.
