Just a few years ago, Rachel Zegler was starring in the musicals at her high school. In 2021, she starred in the Academy Award for Best Picture nominee West Side Story, one of the biggest musical films of the decade. With her great musical success, what would be the logical next step? That might be an opportunity on Broadway.

In an interview with New Jersey Monthly, when asked about when she will make her Broadway debut, she teases that it is “closer than everyone thinks.” She exclaimed, “I’m bursting at the seams about it. So very soon.” While this was all she stated on the topic, this created some buzz.

Zegler snagged the role of Maria in West Side Story shortly after an opening call, chosen out of over 30,000 people. Maria was her professional role, which she received right out of high school. Her talents were just what this film remake needed, and she ended up with a starring part, and a Golden Globe win.

Before being cast as Maria, Zegler would post song covers on her Youtube channel. Her highest-viewed video “Shallow” from A Star is Born garnered over 3.4 million views. She also starred in musicals throughout high school. This includes The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. So one could say that she has been preparing for Broadway her whole life.

Zegler’s singing skills will soon be on display in the new Snow White where she plays the titular character. This film is on track to release in 2024. In addition, she will use her acting skills in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Furthermore, she will be in the forthcoming Shazam sequel Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Both films are coming out later this year. While the latter two will not require her singing voice, they will show off her fantastic acting abilities.

There has been no announcement about what Zegler will play on Broadway, nor when she will be on Broadway. There have been rumors online that Zegler may be starring in a revival of the 1979 musical Evita. However, there are certainly no confirmations at the moment so nothing can be taken as fact. Whatever Broadway musical she stars in, it will likely be a star vehicle requiring some powerhouse vocals.
