Chris Pine finally confirmed that Harry Styles did not spit on him at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Don’t Worry Darling despite the internet’s claims.

In September, Don’t Worry Darling premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The release came amid immense buzz due to rumored behind-the-scenes drama. The movie received a standing ovation, but the cast’s appearance at the festival did not dampen rumors. Rather, they inspired quite a few more.

One of which was that Harry Styles, who stars as Jack, spit on his co-star, Chris Pine. The internet went crazy with memes and clips of the interaction. A few days later, Styles jokingly addressed the controversy at one of his concerts. The star playfully commented that he was glad to be in New York after he “popped quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine.” Chris Pine’s representative confirmed the rumor to be false, along with the film’s director, Olivia Wilde. However, these statements did not change the internet’s mind about what has been dubbed “split-gate.”

Now, months later, Chris Pine has finally commented on the situation in a video with Esquire. The star unequivocally stated, “Harry did not spit on me.” Although, he did concede that it “does indeed look like he’s spitting on me. He didn’t spit on me.”

Pine went on to explain some context about the situation, but not before reminding everyone that “Harry is a very kind guy.” Pine stated, “I think Harry leaned down and said, ‘It’s just words isn’t it?’” This was a part of the pair’s joke, as Pine went on to explain, that had to do with making statements while jet lagged.

The actuality of these claims did not matter to the internet, as every online platform was filled with jokes regarding the situation. Not only that, but Chris Pine went viral in Venice for a reason outside of “spit-gate.” The internet took clips of Pine doing press out of context, commenting on how bored he appeared. In the same video with Esquire, the star simply laughs at the meme, again explaining the severe jet lag he and his co-stars faced.

To watch the film that sparked the swirl of internet drama that took over everyone’s feeds, Don’t Worry Darling is streaming on HBO Max
