Netflix’s Avatar : The Last Airbender Is Almost Here
When the world needed him most, he vanished. Now, he returns once again. Avatar Aang comes back this week to restore balance to the world in Netflix’s new live-action series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a live-action reimagining of the much-adored 2005 animated series of the same name. It follows a young Avatar named Aang as he works to learn the four elements and restore balance to the world. The series will premiere February 22 and features eight episodes.
Within the series, Avatar Aang, portrayed by Gordon Cormier, is a young Air Nomad whose people have been killed off by the power-hungry Fire Nation. As the Avatar, Aang has the ability to control the four elements: Water, Air, Earth, and Fire. He must work with his newfound friends Katara and Sokka and master his abilities in order to stop the conquests of the cruel Fire Lord Ozai, portrayed by Lost actor Daniel Dae Kim, and restore the peace that once existed.
Netflix first teased the epic fantasy series on January 23. The trailer introduced the main characters and showcased the amazing visual effects and design choices that bring the original world of the animated series to life.
The final trailer for the series was dropped, in which fans can see Avatar Kyoshi as she guides Aang through the Avatar State. Netflix teased the return of beloved characters like King Bumi, Suki, Uncle Iroh, and even the iconic Cabbage Merchant.
The series embraces its Indigenous and Asian roots, featuring a diverse cast and drawing inspiration from East Asain, Southeast Asian, South Asian, and Himalayan cultures. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, the actor who portrays Uncle Iroh, shares how ground breaking that representation is. “For the longest time as an actor of color, you don’t get opportunities to play in these kind of franchises,” he explains. “You have no idea how important that is and how many more voices people will find because of this.”
Fans are thrilled for the release of the long-awaited season.

Drawing upon the powerful animated series that inspired the live-action, the new adaptation is highly anticipated by fans. Executive Producer Albert Kim shares how he hopes the new series will exceed expectations and introduce the story to new audiences: “I hope longtime fans are both satisfied with everything that we’ve brought over from the original, but also surprised by some of the changes we’ve made to the story. I’m hoping new viewers find themselves engaged and immersed the way I was when I first discovered this story.”
