Kristin Chenoweth Is Beaming With Joy After the Wicked Trailer
Broadway actress Kristin Chenoweth took to X to share her support for the trailer of the upcoming Wicked film coming to theaters this Thanksgiving.
Kristin Chenoweth couldn’t be happier to watch the Wicked (Part One) trailer. Released on May 15, the full Wicked trailer provided an in-depth look at its “Popular” cast of characters, fantastical sets, and whimsical costumes. Fans also heard more of Cynthia Erivo’s rendition of the production’s showstopping number “Defying Gravity,” while Ariana Grande sang a snippet of “Popular.”
Kristin Chenoweth Reacts to the Wicked Trailer
The Tony Award winner quoted a post on X shortly after the trailer was released, expressing her excitement for the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. She wrote, “I’ve been crying happy tears for 20 minutes. And that’s EXACTLY my face.” The image from the original post is of Chenoweth smiling at an airborne Idina Menzel as she belted “Defying Gravity” during their 2004 Tony Awards performance.

The Glinda Upland actress originated the role in 2004 alongside Menzel, who portrayed Elphaba Thropp, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Both actresses were nominated for Best Actress in a Musical in 2004, but Menzel won, earning her first Tony. The Emmy winner admired her co-star during her speech, stating, “Kristin Chenoweth, you are the grace and the light on that stage every night. This is something we’ve built together, and I love you.”
Kristin’s Continued Involvement with Wicked
Despite leaving the show nine months after its Broadway run began, the Wicked actress has remained involved with the franchise in the following years. She reunited with Menzel in 2016 to sing “For Good,” a sentimental ballad about friendship and forgiveness found in the musical’s second act. When the Broadway production reopened after coronavirus closures in 2020, Chenoweth attended the musical’s reopening in September 2021. “There’s no place like home,” she proclaimed as the crowd cheered. She also appeared at the musical’s 20-year anniversary special performance alongside Menzel.
Kristin and Ariana Throughout the Years
Chenoweth first met Ariana Grande backstage at Wicked when the soon-to-be pop star was 10 years old. In an interview with Sirius XM, Chenoweth stated, “It’s a full circle moment. She came in my dressing room when she was 10 years old with her nana and her mom. She said ‘I want to be Glinda,’ and I thought ‘Oh, that’s sweet.’ Her nana goes, ‘She really can sing.’ Her mother goes, ‘Sing something for her.'” The actress also explained how Grande recalled Chenoweth gave her a parting gift of “hand soap and a little plastic wand.”
The pair have collaborated on numerous projects since then, including NBC’s televised production of Hairspray Live! in 2016. Grande portrayed the sheltered teenager Penny Pingleton and Chenoweth Velma Von Tussell, an overbearing, bigoted stage mom. The two sopranos then collaborated on Chenoweth’s seventh studio album, For the Girls, covering “You Don’t Own Me” three years later. In 2021, the “we can’t be friends” singer invited the Emmy nominee to be her team advisor on Season 21 of The Voice.
