From the creative mind of Brazilian director Bernardo Britto, the science fiction drama Omni Loop deals with themes of immortality, death, and the pursuit of happiness. His previous credits include several episodes of the HBO series Los Espookys, the feature-length film Jacqueline Argentine, and several short films, including Hudson Geese. This is considered his most significant film to date. Premiering at the Southwest Film Festival the meticulously written picture ranks as the director’s second feature.

The near-future sci-fi explores things we take for granted while searching for an unattainable life. With a brilliant synchronized performance between Mary-Louise Parker and The Bear actress, Ayo Edebiri, the duo brings a distinct and honest performance amid peculiarities and anomalies.

The film centers around a 55-year-old mother, wife, and quantum physicist, Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker). She appears to have a growing black hole forming in the center of her chest.

Her doctor informs her family the black hole in her chest is incurable and has a week to live. The physician counsels the family to bring her home, tend to her needs, and offer any diversions they can think of to prevent her from thinking about her fate. Her condition escalates as she relives the same moment and the week to follow many times over.

With impending doom hurtling towards her, the character’s aloofness slowly turns to irritation. From reluctantly meeting with her publisher to review her modern physics textbook and will to visiting her mother in a nursing home, she is haunted by the guilt of not living up to her full potential.

To lighten the mood, her family holds a surprise party for her birthday. As she blows out her candles, she gets a nosebleed. Rushing to take another pill, Zoya wakes up in the hospital and repeats the cycle.

Zoya takes to the physics department of the university she once attended. There, Zoya meets Paula (Ayo Edebiri), a student in the physics department. After repeatedly explaining her situation to Paula, the two produce a strategy to figure out the issue behind the perpetual cycle and how to resolve it.

In the end, Omni Loop tells a story about the inevitable nature of death, the disparity of morality, and accepting the actions that individuals take during their short time on earth. To watch the film, click here.
