Simon Cowell, the man who formed and signed One Direction in 2010, has published an emotional statement in honor of Liam Payne.

This past Wednesday, One Direction fans were shocked to find out about the death of one of the band members. Liam Payne unexpectedly passed away after falling off his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The singer was only 31 years old.

People watched as those close to Liam Payne released their heartfelt statements, paying tribute to the singer. Harry Styles’ mother posted a black screen with a large heartbreak emoji captioned “Just a boy” on Instagram. Cheryl Cole, the mother to his son Bear, urged fans to “give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last.”

One Direction released a sentimental joint statement on Instagram, writing, “We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.” Members Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles added, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”

Many were shocked when Simon Cowell released his tribute to Liam Payne. Cowell details, “You never really know how you feel about someone until a moment like this happens. Liam, I am truly devastated. Heartbroken. And I fell empty. And I want you to know how much love and respect I have for you. Every tear I have shed is a memory of you.”

He adds that Payne was “kind, funny, sweet, thoughtful, talented, humble, focused,” and he “loved music” and his fans. The X-Factor judge reminisced, “I had to tell you when you were 14 that this wasn’t your time. And we both made a promise that we would meet again. A lot of people would have given up. You didn’t. You came back and within months the whole world knew Liam. And you never forgot the fans. I watched you spending so much time with people who had wanted to meet you. You really cared.”

The America’s Got Talent judge reportedly met the singer’s son, Bear, describing the similar physical attributes the two shared. He ends the statement by recounting, “Liam, I can see the effect you had on so many people. Because you left us too soon. Rest in peace my friend. And I am sending my love, thoughts and prayers to your family. Simon X.”

He received both love and backlash from One Direction fans and fellow X-Factor cast members due to their belief that Payne and other contestants on the show were “exploited” at a young age and “are still living with the aftermath and the PTSD.”

Celebrity news outlet TMZ also faced a large outrage from fans after they posted images of the singer’s supposed body at the scene, only showcasing his tattoos located on his arm and hip. Canadian singer Alessia Cara called out TMZ’s inappropriate behavior, stating, “you’re gross @TMZ.”
