Live-action adaptations are Hollywood’s next big thing. How to Train Your Dragon, a beloved animated film franchise, will be brought to life next year.

Universal Pictures announced an exclusive first look at the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. A beloved film from the DreamWorks Animation franchise (think Kung Fu Panda, Shrek), the original had three animated films, multiple spinoff series, and shorts. Fast-forward to today, the animated series will receive live-action treatment, even giving fans a special look at one of their favorite dragons, Toothless.

That’s right. Toothless, everyone’s favorite animated dragon, with his human friends Hiccup and Astrid, will star in the live-action film. The new film flies into theaters next year on June 13, the perfect time to hit the theaters when school is out of session. There are a few familiar faces who will be portraying the live-action versions of the animated characters.

Mason Thames will be portraying Hiccup. Hiccup, son of Stoick, wants to kill dragons just like his father, but he refuses. One night, during an invasion of the dragons, Hiccup encounters a rare dragon. When he is about to slay the dragon, he is hesitant and does not kill it. Instead, he befriends the dragon, Toothless, and assembles a team of dragons to protect his town from danger.

Toward the end of the trailer, the live-action film recreates the first meeting between Hiccup and Toothless. Hiccup turns away to assure Toothless he will not harm him, thus starting the creation of their unbreakable bond. Also displayed throughout the trailer is Stoick, Hiccup’s father. Voiced by Gerard Butler in the original animated adaptation, Butler will return to portray in the live-action version.

Besides Thames and Butler, Nico Parker (The Last of Us) will portray Astrid, and Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) will depict Fishlegs Ingerman. With Hiccup, Toothless, and Stoick looking exactly like their animated counterparts, it’s safe to say other beloved characters will also resemble the animated version very closely. While there are still a couple of months before the film’s release, expect several other trailers to show another sneak peek of the latest adaptation.
