Sophie Thatcher Buys New House Upstate, Leaves L.A. Behind
Sophie Thatcher has entered a new chapter, and it comes with a mailbox in Upstate New York.
The ‘Yellowjackets’ star revealed in a new Variety interview that she has bought a house and relocated from Los Angeles, a move she frames less as a career decision than as a personal reset.
“I bought a house,” she said. “I’m in Upstate New York now. I was in LA and realized LA wasn’t for me at this point, and I want to be removed enough from New York City and maybe go there on the weekends. I think it was just, ‘OK, let’s end this chapter of my life and let’s move on.'”
Why Los Angeles Stopped Working
Thatcher has been candid about what wore her down about the city, and her description of it is the sort of thing anyone who has lived where they work will recognize instantly.
“Living in LA felt like I was living upstairs of the restaurant I work at or something,” she told Cultured earlier this summer. “I felt like I couldn’t escape anything.”
There is a lovely postscript to that, too. “As soon as I leave a place, I miss it,” she added. “I miss it in a way that I can appreciate it from afar.” It is not a rejection so much as a recalibration.
A House Built for Making Things
The best detail is who she shares it with. Thatcher lives upstate with her identical twin sister Ellie, a visual artist who works in Claymation, stop-motion and puppetry, and the two are building a music studio together.
“That’s the beautiful thing about having her. She’s so inspiring, because she just works all day,” Thatcher has said of her twin. “We’re building a music studio. We’re just making art all day. I want to start a band with her. We have the same taste.”
For two sisters who spent their childhood making homemade zombie movies together, a shared house full of instruments and clay figures reads like the most natural possible outcome.
What Comes Next
The move arrives at a genuine inflection point. ‘Yellowjackets,’ the Showtime series that made her a star in 2021, is ending after four seasons, and Thatcher is deliberately loosening her grip on what came before. She has spoken about stepping away from horror after ‘Heretic,’ ‘Companion’ and ‘The Boogeyman,’ and about being increasingly comfortable turning projects down.
What she wants instead is music, made with her friend Maral, and films with directors she admires, naming Jennifer Kent among them.
“If I have time off, I just want to focus on stuff that isn’t for anyone else and just for me,” she said. “I want to do something that’s not in my safe zone.”
She currently stars in Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Her Private Hell,’ which premiered at Cannes and arrives in theaters July 26.
A house of her own, her favorite collaborator down the hall, and permission to make things purely because she wants to. At 25, that sounds like a very good chapter to be starting.
