Alanis Morissette has been picked for the Yellowjackets team. After Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine reimagined “Just A Girl” for the series, Morissette had the opportunity to release her own version of “No Return,” which appeared in the opening credits of Episode 4 titled “Old Wounds.” The surprising collaboration delighted fans. The singer’s cover is a one-off for Episode 4, and the original theme song will return for the fifth episode. However, fans are promised that Morissette’s song will pop up at other points in the season.

The original song “No Return” was composed by Craig Wendren and Anna Waronker, who also serve as the music writers on the series.

The “You Oughta Know” singer expressed nothing but praise for the track, stating that the original version is “just a perfect song.” She revealed that it was a “little daunting to be asked to reinterpret it” but admits that she sees “parallels between Yellowjackets and my perspective while songwriting: the sheer intensity, that going for the jugular with no fear around going for the profane.”

She continued, “I’ve strived my entire career to support the empowerment of women and sensitives and see the world through the female lens, and what’s so wonderful about this show is that each character is allowed to be dynamic and complex as opposed to oversimplified, reduced versions of women.”

Morissette has always been an advocate for women in the music industry. The singer famously skipped the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where she was scheduled to perform a duet alongside Olivia Rodrigo.

She addressed her absence, writing, “I have spent decades in an industry that is rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment and have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation, and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career.” She adds that she was “thankful to be at a point in her life where there is no need for her to spend time in an environment that reduces women.”

We look forward to hearing more of Alanis Morissette’s vocals in Yellowjackets. The series can be streamed on Showtime.
