Women March On Capitol Hill To Protest New Healthcare Bill
And they did it dressed in Handmaid’s Tale costumes!
People are very upset over the Senate’s new health care bill, which would defund Planned Parenthood, make maternity and reproductive health coverage unaffordable for many women, and cause millions of individuals to become uninsured if passed.
30 women stood up for their rights and protested the bill at the U.S. Capitol building Tuesday, June 20. The women decked themselves out in the same red robes and white bonnets as the characters on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, making both a political and fashion statement. The show comments on today’s threats to women’s health and reproductive rights.
A Planned Parenthood volunteer who protested that day told CNN “We deduced to dress in the ‘Handmaids’-inspired costumes because the novel/television series presents a dystopia where women’s bodies are not their own. This narrative is all too real. We want our senators and administrators to know just how serious we take their legislation and our right to health care. The costumes make a visual statement and demonstrate how seriously we take this.”
Due to the lack of support, the Senate has recently announced that the vote to pass the bill will be postponed!
