Issa Rae brings attention to the advice a white producer had given her for the TV series Insecure.

HBO’s show Insecure is a comedy series that was released in 2016. It features the companionship of two Black women and their struggles with awkward social encounters and racial discrimination. The purpose of the show is to be relatable for Black women that may face similar issues and exposures while also bringing out the message of self-confidence.

Rae mentions to the LA Times, “We’re just trying to convey that people of color are relatable. This is not a hood story, this is about regular people living life.”

Recently, a white executive had expressed to Rae what he believes Black people would want to watch. The actress felt shocked by the executive’s incorrect assumption of her show. She mentions the executive’s words were, “Yeah, it’s about this Black woman and her Black-woman problems, hilarious.” In which Rae had remarked that he was incorrect and didn’t understand the show.

The executive then further stated, “Yeah, but you know, the Black audience, they want to see familiar faces. So, you might need to switch up the characters.” The actress was in disbelief as she told People Magazine, “Why does he get to tell me what gets to be on TV? Why does he get to tell me what people like me like to see? I’m here! I’m telling you what I want to see. I made it.”

We are loving the clap back from the actress and hope to see more of her work in upcoming seasons. Make sure to stay updated for future episodes and follow Rae on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to keep up with her new projects.
