Pop singer Katy Perry had thousands of fans in a frenzy over her latest “haircut,” but quickly clapped back at fans and clarified that it was just a wig.

This Monday, Katy Perry debuted a brand new haircut in a video posted to her Instagram. Still sticking with her iconic black hair that launched her initial career, the video featured her hairstylist actively cutting her hair above her shoulders. The new look sent fans into a frenzy, concerned about the singer’s future career plans.

First, for some background context, fans have associated short hair with the singer as a sign of “bad luck.” When Perry debuted her platinum blonde pixie cutback in 2017 for her album Witness, fans attributed the style choice to the album not receiving much accolades or praise.

Now, flash forward seven years later, fans have expressed the same concern regarding the Smile singer’s new black wispy bob. Her Instagram was flooded with comments, such as “Here we go again” and “When we said justice for witness… we didn’t mean recreate it.”

Perry was not taking any criticism for the look, whether it was faux or not. She assured fans that it was just a wig in a new Instagram post where she was photographed drinking a Coca-Cola in a dazzling black blazer dress, adding humor to her message.

The pop singer “clapped” back at fans for being disrespectful toward her new look, even calling those who left negative comments “KatyRats,” a play on her fanbase’s name, “KatyCats.”

In the video, the singer states, “You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my new haircut. Let’s see that energy for KP6 because this is just a wig,” followed by her winking at the camera.

KP6 references to her sixth studio album, which is rumored to be dropping sometime this year. With a new album comes a new era, but instead of bashing the singer’s new ‘do, she wants them to place their energy on something more exciting: a new album coming almost four years from her last album, Smile (2020).

Next, Perry will enter a new musical era and a new life era. After seven years as a judge on American Idol, the singer announced earlier in February that she will be retiring, passing the torch to the next musician or celebrity to fill.

While we hope the singer does not plan to pause her newest era of music, it’s safe to say she will have more than enough time to tease fans even more about her latest project.

For now, you can catch Perry on American Idol live every Sunday at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on ABC and exclusively streaming on Hulu.
