In the Heights stars Anthony Ramos (A Star is Born, Broadway’s Hamilton), in addition to Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton, BlacKkKlansman), singer/songwriter Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (Vida), Olga Merediz (Broadway’s In the Heights), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Broadway’s Rent). Together with Gregory Diaz IV (Broadway’s Matilda the Musical), Stephanie Beatriz (TV’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Dascha Polanco (TV’s Orange is the New Black), and Jimmy Smits (the Star Wars films), saying the film will be a hit, is an understatement.

The film was adapted from the screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes and is based on the musical stage play with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman, and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Anthony Ramos commented on his thoughts on the themes of representation and striving for a better life in the film when he stated, “I think it’s a blessing to be able to be a part of [this]. It just baffles my mind that some little Latin kid in the hood somewhere in the world is going to be able to see this and be like, Yo, I can dream. We all have a dream. Whether it’s like, I’m just trying to buy a house, or I’m trying to get a job where I’m comfortable.”

“I’ve never seen anything where there’s 75 Latinos in the middle of the street dancing and singing about pride and where they come from,” Ramos continued during the virtual press event. “I get emotional when I’m thinking about this movie and what it means to me and the culture,” especially one that continues to be significantly underrepresented in Hollywood films.

When asked about her role as Abuela Claudia, the mother of the whole community who is the matriarch along with her theme, “Paciencia y Fe,” Olga Merediz stated, “It means patience and faith; it’s basically a prayer. It’s Abuela Claudia’s motto; it’s her mantra. Her mother passed it on to her, and she’s passing it on to this beautiful community that she loves, and that’s what matriarchs do. Not only are they caring, and they also pass on their wisdom. She is very wise, and in this community, they love each other, and they know how to party and have a good time.”

Olga continued, “Like Anthony [Ramos] says, they have obstacles. They have struggles, but with patience and faith, if they can get through, we can do this. We will survive. We will get through the day. You know, it’s something to give you strength and gives you hope. Believe me, during this pandemic, the song of patience and faith that Lin-Manuel beautifully wrote is in my mind because there wasn’t much to hold on to, and this is something; it’s almost like we’re going to get through the day. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. It’s going to be OK.”
