Halle Berry on Marvel’s New Storm Maya Boyd

The original big-screen Storm is giving Marvel’s newest mutant her blessing. Halle Berry, who brought the beloved weather-controlling superhero to the big screen for more than a decade, is cheering on Maya Boyd as the rising Broadway star prepares to make the role her own in Marvel Studios’ upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot. And Berry has high hopes for the newcomer.

Speaking at the Create & Cultivate Festival in Los Angeles, where she discussed menopause, aging, and women’s health, the Oscar winner shared her excitement about seeing a new actress step into the role of Ororo Munroe.

“I believe she’s going to kill it. You know what I mean?” Berry shared of Boyd’s casting.

Berry first portrayed Storm in 2000’s X-Men, returning for X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Her portrayal helped introduce one of Marvel’s most powerful mutants to a generation of moviegoers.

But Berry isn’t approaching Boyd’s casting as simply passing the torch. Instead, she emphasized that each actress should have the opportunity to create her own interpretation of the iconic character. Berry’s Storm was uniquely hers, and she’s looking forward to seeing what Boyd brings to Ororo.

Meet Maya Boyd, the New Storm

At 23, Boyd is making the leap from Broadway to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises.

A University of Michigan musical theater graduate, she has already built an impressive stage résumé, with credits including Merrily We Roll Along and & Juliet, as well as the Broadway production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone alongside Taraji P. Henson.

Marvel revealed Boyd’s casting as Storm during Disney’s D23 event in August, instantly placing the rising actress at the center of one of the studio’s most anticipated new chapters.

And it’s no small assignment. Storm has long held extraordinary cultural significance as one of Marvel’s most prominent Black superheroes and one of the X-Men’s most celebrated leaders. With her ability to manipulate weather and command the elements, Ororo Munroe is also among the team’s most formidable mutants.

Boyd now has the opportunity to introduce her version of Storm to an entirely new generation.

A Star-Studded ‘X-Men’ Reboot

Boyd won’t be arriving at Xavier’s School alone.

Marvel Studios’ new ensemble includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier. Adam Driver will step into the villainous role of Nathaniel Milbury, better known as Mister Sinister.

The reboot represents Marvel Studios’ long-awaited opportunity to build the X-Men directly into its cinematic universe following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox’s entertainment assets.

For Berry, however, the arrival of another Storm doesn’t erase what came before. Her comments suggest something far more interesting: iconic characters can belong to different generations, and each performer gets the chance to make the role distinctly her own.

Berry has already secured her own place in Hollywood history, including her groundbreaking Oscar win for Monster’s Ball in 2002.
