The Netflix production of Persuasion, a modern retelling based on the novel by Jane Austen, has found its Anne Elliot in Dakota Johnson. The streaming site has yet to announced other actors and actresses attached to the film.

Published six months after her death, Persuasion is the last completed novel by Austen. The source material centers around Elliot, an independent 27-year-old who finds a second shot at love after reuniting with the man her family persuaded to leave behind. The Netflix film will offer a “modern, witty approach” to the beloved story.

Persuasion will mark Carrie Cracknell’s feature film directorial debut. Previously, Cracknell directed the Broadway play, Sea Wall/ A Life. Moreover, Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow adapted the screenplay.

While there is no release date announced, production on the film will begin in May. The film’s producers include Andrew Lazar and Christina Weiss Lurie, with Elizabeth Cantillon, Michael Constable, and David Fliegel serving as executive producers.

This modern-day version is one of two film adaptations of Persuasion in production. The other film is a product of Searchlight Features and will star Sarah Snook in the lead role.

Furthermore, both the Searchlight Features and Netflix productions of Persuasion mark a new milestone for the Austen novel. While made into two miniseries in 1960 and 1971 and two made-for-television films in 1995 and 2007, Persuasion has never been adapted into a feature film.
