Thuso Mbedu to Play Opposite Viola Davis in ‘The Woman King’

Thuso Mbedu is set to star opposite Viola Davis in The Woman King tell that true historical story that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, which is one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. It focuses on Nanisca who is a general of a military unit consisting of all women. Nawi is an eager recruit to the ranks and together they fought enemies that infringed on their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy their lives.

Thuso Mbedu is set to star opposite Viola Davis in The Woman King, The movie will tell the true historical story that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, which was one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. It focuses on Nanisca (Davis), who is a general of a military unit consisting of all women. Nawi (Mbedu) is an eager recruit to the ranks. Together they fought enemies that infringed on their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy their lives.

“The depth and complexity of emotional life, her authentic beauty, and regalness are potent.” said Viola Davis and Julius Tennon from JuVee Productions. “We were mesmerized by Mbedu. We wanted Woman King / Nawi to be the vehicle to introduce her on the big screen.”

Dana Stevens has written the script, while the film is being produced by Cathy Schulman from Welle Entertainment, Tennon and Davis of JuVee Productions, and Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions. Meanwhile, Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are managing the project for TriStar Pictures.

“Mbedu is a generational talent. Her craft, her work ethic, her depth, her passion inspired us all and I cannot wait to play. She is a warrior,” said Prince-Bythewood.

Mbedu is repped by Creative Partners Group, ICM Partners, and Gang, Tyre, Ramer Brown & Passman. She is currently starring in Amazon and Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad, which is projected to be a tremendous hit in 2021. The actress is established in South Africa and has been nominated twice for an International Emmy Award for Best Performance by an Actress for her work on the series Is’Thunzi.
