The upcoming Netflix series Colin in Black & White follows the life and racial struggles of young Colin Kaepernick. Netflix posted first-look photos on Instagram and wrote, “You don’t know Kaepernick until you know Colin. Your very first look at Colin in Black & White, the series from @kaepernick7 and @ava coming this year to Netflix.”

Per Deadline, Kaepernick narrates high school Colin’s story of race, class, and culture as he strives to become the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and an advocate for racial justice. Colin in Black & White stars Jaden Michael as Colin, and Nick Offerman and Mary-Louise Parker as his adoptive parents. On Instagram, Michael was excited to finally “Share this beautiful milestone in my life.”

Kaepernick, who started a movement for justice against police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem during his NFL game in 2016, posted the behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram. He wrote, “It’s been incredible to create COLIN IN BLACK AND WHITE with @ava and Michael Starrbury. Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to bring these stories to life. The series premieres on @netflix Oct 29.”

Ava Duvernay, who is known for directing films about racial injustice like 13th and Selma, wrote on Twitter that it has been “A beautiful journey” to create the series. It is directed by her, Robert Townsend, Angel Kristi Williams, Kenny Leon, and Sheldon Candis.

Offerman, known for his role as Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, shared his excitement about playing Colin’s dad on Twitter. He joked, “I was cast as Rick, dad of @Kaepernick7 because of my abs (not pictured) – and I’m so excited for you to see this beautiful series from him & @ava – hopefully they didn’t cut my shirtless flashbacks.”

DuVernay responded to Offerman, saying that he was easy to work with and his performance was wonderful.

Colin in Black and White premieres on October 29 on Netflix. Be sure to follow Colin Kaepernick on Instagram for more updates.
