Nintendo and Illumination have come together to produce a brand new Super Mario Bros. project — an animated film featuring an A-list voice cast. The video game powerhouse delivered this news on Thursday, September 23 via Nintendo Direct presentation. The current North American release date of the film is set for December 21, 2022, with the international rollout to be announced at a later date.

Partnering with Universal as well, Nintendo spared no expense on the production of the upcoming film. Led by Chris Pratt as Mario, the all-star voice cast came as a shock to fans following the official announcement. The current cast has been revealed to be Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Some fans couldn’t be more excited about this star-studded cast.

Others have expressed a bit more skepticism toward the broad range of notable actors.

A few viewers have expressed their uncertainty toward Pratt’s position in particular, reflecting on the actor’s previous roles and how they struggled to see how well he would be able to deliver the lines. In response, Pratt took to Instagram and reassured fans that he’s “working hard” to perfect Mario’s voice, explaining that the role is a “dream come true.”

Pratt continued, delivering the iconic Mario line without the accent, making it known that fans will “have to wait to hear the voice.”

Despite any hesitation toward the fixed cast, producers assure us that “each actor was cast for the unique spirit of their character.” Are you excited about the upcoming release?
