Ryan Gosling is joining the upcoming Barbie movie in the role of – you guessed it – Ken, as fans grow excited about the news. He will star alongside Margot Robbie, who also leads production of the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. Oscar-winner Greta Gerwig serves as director with the help of Warner Bros. and Mattel.

While Barbie began the initial stages of production back in 2018, the role of Ken has been in question ever since. That is until Gosling signed on. Since its inception, Robbie has become the face of Barbie.

Little else is known about the full cast or plot, but looking at other movies directed by Gerwig (Jackie, Ladybird), it could go in many (exciting) directions.

“[Barbie] comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections,” Robbie told Vogue this past July. “People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t.”

The classic plastic doll has been featured in an assortment of movies over the years, from the titular Barbie movies to cameos in Toy Story. In 2017, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would star as Barbie in a live-action film after Amy Schumer dropped the role that same year. Production moved to 2020 and eventually fell through altogether.

But now we have our Barbie and Ken (and a good-looking duo at that). Robbie and Gosling are sure to capture the history and characters of the dolls in whatever form the movie takes on.

Production is expected to begin by early 2022 at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in London. So be on the lookout for the dazzling duo and updates from filming, before the eventual release in 2023.
