New Percy Jackson TV Series Moves Forward with Production

Disney+ is moving forward with the new Percy Jackson show. The author of the series, Rick Riordan, made a video announcement that was posted via Disney+’s Twitter page.

"The wait is over, demigods. I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens. The smart folks at Disney+ have given us the green light."

“The wait is over, demigods. I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens. The smart folks at Disney+ have given us the green light.”

Riordan will help write and direct the pilot episode. In addition to Riordan, Dan Shotz, James Bobin, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, Monica Owusu-Breen, Jim Rowe, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg will be executive produce the series. Bobin will also serve as director, and Jon Steinberg will write the series. 20th Television is the studio working on the show.

“James is a terrific person and also an incredibly talented director who recently directed the pilot for Disney+’s The Mysterious Benedict Society,” Riordan said. “James knows the Percy Jackson books well — his kids are fans — so we’re in great hands. Thanks to all of you for your excitement about the series. It’s gonna be great.”

The Percy Jackson TV series will stick to the books this time. Originally, the books were adapted into two live-action movies–Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters–which strayed too far from the books and ended up flopping. Even Riordan made his disdain for the live-action movies known in a deleted tweet.

“I still have not seen the movies, and don’t plan on ever doing so. I judge them from having read the scripts because I care most about the story. I certainly have nothing against the very talented actors. Not their fault. I’m just sorry they got dragged into that mess.”

Casting is currently underway. Just like the books, the TV show will follow twelve-year-old Percy Jackson, who discovers he’s a demigod and has powers. The God of Gods Zeus accuses Jackson of stealing his lightning bolt. In order to clear his name, Jackson embarks on a journey to find the missing bolt.

The two live-action Percy Jackson films are available on Disney+. All of the Percy Jackson books can be purchased on Amazon.
