Euphoria season 2 has fans buzzing over its ethereal soundtrack and exciting needle drops.

Labrinth, the talent behind the score, created music pieces for each character in the show’s first season. The score has taken a backseat in season 2 in favor of outsourced tunes but still provides a powerful connection to the characters.

In a 2019 interview with Rolling Stone, Labrinth discussed his inspiration for one of the most famous songs made for the show, “Still Don’t Know My Name.” “That was one of the first ones I put together for Rue’s character, because I remember seeing that scene where she’s kind of having a trip,” he stated. “I was just like, ‘I wanna write or produce something that expresses the wonky weirdness and the kind of psychosis that she’s going through while she’s having that trip and that experience.'”

The fourth episode of season 2, entitled “You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can,” featured Labrinth in the flesh, singing to Zendaya’s character “Rue” during a drug-induced church service and her dead father’s appearance. The song “I’m Tired” was a musical expression of Rue’s pain and exhaustion, using gospel influences to tie the religious imagery into the scene.

The choice of songs varies between genres and decades, giving a fullness to the sound of the show. From Steely Dan to INXS to Baby Keem, Euphoria uses its song choices to tie characters together. In the same episode, Cal Jacobs and Cassie Howard are shown dancing to “Drink Before the War” by Sinead O’Conner while they separately break down.

The release of Euphoria‘s season 2 soundtrack on streaming services will surely be highly anticipated. Euphoria airs Sundays at 9 EST on HBO.
