Celebrating 20 Years of Avril Lavigne
Happy 20 Years of Avril Lavigne. The Canadian singer’s debut single, “Complicated,” turns twenty today.
The Pop-Punk Princess is celebrating quite the milestone today. Lavigne officially arrived on the pop-punk scene on March 11, 2002. Her debut single continues to be a monumental moment for women in music, and it is an honor for the singer to have that impact.
She calls “Complicated” the most important song of her career. She elaborates on ABC Audio, “It’s so extremely special, and as the years have gone on, it’s become even more meaningful to me, just with that being my first single. I wrote it when I was sixteen with Lauren Christy. I put it out when I was seventeen.”
The “Bite Me” singer had fans feeling all the nostalgia today, posting a series of snaps to her social media accounts. She writes on Twitter, “Holy f*ck! #Complicated was released 20 years ago today. I could have never imagined the places this song would take me. I am so grateful to you guys always and 4-ever for embracing my music and showing me so much love then, and still now, 20 years later.”

Lavigne took to Instagram to share more about the importance of “Complicated.” She writes, “The song that started it all for me. F*cking neckties…black eyeliner…tank tops…fat sk8 shoes…Dickies!!! This was the first music video I ever shot…My first time hearing myself on the radio…”
Lavigne is having an incredible year so far. She released her seventh studio album, Love Sux, on February 25. She continues to have longevity as a female artist in a genre that is often male-dominated. Lavigne continues to make big waves in the industry, inspiring millions of women.
