Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery an Exciting Toronto Premiere

Lionsgate

Netflix submits Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival for its highly-anticipated premiere.

After the three-year wait, the Knives Out sequel will reach audiences worldwide. Tastefully titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the film will launch at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. This annual event returns for 11 days, debuting a wide selection of Canadian and international films.

This year, the festival runs from September 8 to September 18.

Released in 2019, Knives Out earned a place in movie lovers’ hearts. With a 97% critic rating and a 92% audience rating on Rotten TomatoesKnives Out was well-received by critics and audiences everywhere. Beautifully directed and masterfully written, the original earned over 311.4 million dollars at the box office.

The movie has a typical whodunnit plot. After the death of Harlan Thrombey, detective Benoit Blanc—played by Daniel Craig—must find the truth in the chaos of the family. However, the film subverts the trope by starring a compassionate detective instead of an arrogant, brooding protagonist. In an attempt to understand the family dynamic, Blanc finds the true killer in a suspenseful twist. Craig plays the role perfectly. However, the ensemble cast steals the show. Knives Out includes remarkable performances from Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Katherine Langford, and LaKeith Stanfield.

After the success of Knives Out, Netflix pounced. According to Variety magazine, Netflix bought the sequels for a whopping 450 million dollars. Netflix promises the return of Craig’s lovable detective. After securing a deal, Netflix agreed to pay Craig the same amount, securing the actor for two sequels.

The first of the sequels, Glass Onion, includes a new cast and a new location. The film’s cast includes Marvel’s Kathryn Hahn, Edward Norton, and acclaimed vocalists Leslie Odom Jr. and Janelle Monáe. Other famous faces include Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, and many more.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery strays away from its cozy, Boston-style mansion for this sequel. Audiences can expect wonderous, open views from its new location: Greece. As director Rian Johnson showcases on Twitter, the locations are gorgeous.

Johnson returns as writer and director. His previous projects, including Looper and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, were nominated for Bradbury Awards and Saturn Awards—awards celebrating spectacular science fiction films. Knives Out also earned a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Between the return of Daniel Craig, the remarkable new cast, and Johnson’s brilliant directing, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be a must-see at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the meantime, readers can watch a trailer for the film below.
