Season 4 of Sex Education, which has not yet been released, is saying goodbye to many beloved characters. However, fans will see some familiar faces.

The Netflix original series has been widely popular from the start of its first season, and fans of the show are always excited as new seasons are released. Sex Education is one of those shows where audiences get to really know the characters. Instead of only diving into the lives of a few main characters, viewers get to see the experiences, personalities, and more of various characters.

The longer a show runs, the more prone it is to change. Both general and character-specific storylines can’t be stagnant because watching the development of a story is what keeps people hooked on any film or TV series. Behind the scenes, actors’ lives are also shifting, leading to casting changes.

As far as we know, there are four characters that we won’t see in the upcoming season of Sex Education.

Rakhee Thakrar (Emily) gave the most recent announcement. The actress says that she loved her time on Sex Education and is fond of the series but will not be returning for season 4. “I’m not part of the new series,” she tells Daily Star Sunday. “I can’t really talk about why.”

Tanya Reynolds (Lily) expressed a ton of love for the series, her character, and her experience as a cast member. However, Reynolds says that letting some characters go is the “natural progression” for shows like Sex Education. “When you have such big ensemble casts and so many characters, I think you have to let a few older characters go to make way for newer ones, which is absolutely the right thing, the way it should happen,” she reveals to Radio Times.

Patricia Allison (Lily’s girlfriend Ola) will also be leaving Sex Education. She announced this in a radio interview with Capital XTRA.

Simone Ashley (Olivia) is the fourth actress who will not be making a return to the series. Any Bridgerton fan knows that Ashley joined the show for its second season and is one of the storyline’s main characters (Miss Kate Sharma). Her new role likely contributed to the actress’s decision to leave Sex Education.

There are definitely some mixed emotions about the cast list for the new season. Some fans are sad to see their favorite characters go, reflecting on light-hearted memories from earlier seasons. Others predict that the show may suffer in quality after losing multiple important characters.

We can still expect other familiar faces and fan favorites. Asa Butterfield (Otis), Emma Mackey (Maeve), Ncuti Gatwa (Eric), Connor Swindells (Adam), and Gillian Anderson (Jean) are just a few of the characters we know and love that have not mentioned leaving the show thus far, so fans can hope to see them return.

With so many changes in the cast, the storyline of Sex Education will have to change. However, fans won’t know exactly how until the new season is released. While awaiting the new season, fans can stream seasons 1-3 on Netflix.
