On Tuesday, August 9, the producer of Strange Adventures, Greg Berlanti, confirmed that this DC series, which has been in development since 2019, will not stream on HBO Max.

The series was announced in 2019. With hour-long episodes, the drama unwrapped the intersection between superhumans and ordinary human beings for fans. The series was part of a larger plan by Warner Bros. to expand the DCEU on HBO Max. Many spinoffs have already been available on the streaming service, including Titans (2018), Doom Patrol (2019), and Peacemaker (2022).

However, almost no updates about Strange Adventures have been announced within the past three years. On August 6, 2022, producer Kevin Smith finally revealed some details about the show in his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On.

In his latest podcast, Smith told fans he was directing an episode of the series along with Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco. According to Screen Rant, “their episode would have focused on Jimmy Olsen and Perry White being taken by Bizarro to Bizarro World.” While no formal contract has been signed, Nicolas Cage was anticipated to be cast as Bizarro. The content of the episode seemed incredible. Then the news that Strange Adventures had been axed arrived.

Smith shared agitatedly, “I got a call the other day from Eric before all of this story broke and he was just like ‘Strange Adventures is officially dead,’ and I was like…are you serious?!'”

Such news, coming along with the controversial cancellation of Batgirl, triggered outrage among fans. Many took to Twitter to question the company’s decision and started to doubt the future of DCEU. However, there is still good news that Green Lantern, also directed by Greg Berlanti, survived the cancellation and will stream on HBO Max. Meanwhile, classical shows like Harley Quinn are also in production for new seasons and will arrive soon.

Maybe it’s too early for fans to be disappointed. According to Variety, “Zaslav said on the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings call on Aug. 4 that the plan is to establish a 10-year plan for the DC film and television universe, similar to how Marvel has done so with their own expansive slate.” Though Warner Bros. has made many controversial decisions recently, the company has no plans to nix the DC Brand. This is only the beginning of a much larger plan to expand the DCEU.
