Amazon Prime Video released the new trailer of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power during the San Diego Comic-Con. On September 2, this much-awaited series will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime.

The stories in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power are set to take place thousands of years before those in J.R.R. Tolkien’s well-known works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. According to About Amazon, the series will “bring the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history to screens. This epic drama will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.”

The latest teaser carefully portrayed the Middle-earth setting when humans, dwarves, and elves are all threatened by the dreaded evil, Sauron. Throughout the trailer, the camera gives a broad view of scenes of grand fights and disasters, emphasizing the power of darkness over the world. The classical character in Lord of the Rings, elf Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), foresees the fearful world brought by the growing evil in her fortune-telling crystal ball. A shot of Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur) comes later, in which he is warned that the evil is planning to bury them “all beneath the mountain.”

In previous works in The Lord of the Rings franchise, stories are almost exclusively focused on white males. However, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings fans a surprisingly diverse cast. For example, Ismael Cruz Córdova (In the Blood) will play elf Arondir in the series, making history as the first person of color to star as a Tolkien elf. Meanwhile, Sophia Nomvete (The Tempest) will star as dwarven princess Disa, the franchise’s first female dwarf. Through enriching narrations of female and racially diverse characters Amazon Prime Video shows its determined commitment to diversity.

As a report on Game Rant suggested, “Tolkien’s worlds were a unique and immersive experience that inspired the reader to be courageous. In most cases, they even had a character, or multiple, that they connected to and saw themselves in, but being an almost entirely white cast, this was an experience that in many ways, only white viewers could have.” This time, the diversified Middle-earth world will finally allow viewers from different backgrounds to immerse themselves in the stories and successfully broadens the audience for Lord of the Rings.

Meanwhile, the production team has produced a lot of art teasers to show the key characters and the important rings to fans.

The release date of the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is fast approaching. Fans in more than 240 countries and territories may enjoy the epic drama in multiple languages directly through Amazon Prime Video. New episodes will be updated weekly.
